SAE Brasil Aerodesign is a competition that seeks to encourage teamwork and the search for knowledge in the training of undergraduate students, through the development of a radio-controlled plane for transporting cargo. Dozens of college teams from all over Brazil and some from other countries participate with their projects, with the first place in the Micro class, the first in the Advanced class and the two best in the Regular class earning the right to represent the country in the North American competition.
The first edition of Aerodesign took place in 1999, with about 10 participating teams, including UNICAMP, which had not yet called Urubus. In 2022, in its 24nd edition, 91 registrations were registered and a high technical level, with 1350 registered participants and 79 educational institutions, from Brazil and abroad; as had been the case in previous years. This high level is evidenced by the Brazilian participation in the USA, in which Brazil was champion several times.
During the competition, not only flight and cargo carrying characteristics are evaluated. There is also the need to produce a report and an oral presentation, forcing the teams to have complete mastery over the development phases, structural tests and construction of the plane. Thus, students have an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in their graduation in practice, in addition to experiencing the difficulties and advantages of collaboration between team members and the exchange of experiences with other participants.
